Chapter Fifteen

The next day, Becky ran next door to the Rockdales’ house to find Teddy reading a book on his front porch with a mint julep in his hand. When he saw Becky approaching, he smiled but shook his head.

“I saw you loaded into that paddy wagon and was sure I was going to have to fork over a mint to get you out of the cooler,” he said before looking over his shoulder at the house to make sure no one was listening. “How much trouble are you in?”

“I’m not sure,” Becky replied, which was the truth.

“I followed you, but when I saw that the copper was bringing you home, I figured you’d be all right. You don’t look like you are any worse for wear.” Teddy gave her a gentle tap on the chin. “Trouble’s been on your heels lately.”

“I know,” Becky said sadly.

Everyone in her house knew something wasn’t right. The air inside was filled with tension, and it seemed to keep getting thicker with every passing day. Judge had come home late last night and had spoken to no one. Kitty had gotten up early, but she spoke to no one. Fanny spoke to anyone who would listen about her desperate need for a new dress and how she’d been thinking that it might be time for Aunt Kitty and Uncle Judge to throw another party.

“The weather is deliciously cool,” Fanny said. “I think after the luncheon excitement, it might be a nice way to show our appreciation to our friends and neighbors.”

Kitty nodded and said she’d think about it. Becky felt awful for her mother. But still, she wasn’t going to put her emotions on display as she had in the past. Even if she was spitting mad, she was going to hold her head high.

“Whose friends and neighbors?” Becky asked.

“Why, our friends and neighbors.” Fanny glared at Becky, who took a long sip of coffee.

Now at Teddy’s she asked him for help. She should have known he’d be a little hesitant. How many times had she dragged him on a wild goose chase in which he’d gotten into a pinch? Too many times.

“Forget it. I’ll ask Moxley. I’m sure he needs something in town,” Becky said. “You know I adore you, Teddy. And I’m sorry for all the hoopla.”

“Oh, you know that I can’t say no to you. Let me get my hat,” Teddy said, making Becky feel relieved.

“I mean it,” she said as they drove. “You are the cat’s pajamas. And you can just drop me off at the bank. I’ll walk from there.”

“Where are you headed?” Teddy asked. “Because I don’t think Adam is able to leave work today. I wouldn’t even try to hunt him down.”

Becky was surprised when she looked at Teddy. “What? I wasn’t going to look for Adam, but why would you say that?”

“I just didn’t want you wearing your dogs out if he wasn’t around,” Teddy said, but Becky didn’t need a death row confession to know he was not telling her the whole story.
